Naming the New City

Updated from January 2017

Since the City is "Getting Serious" I thought I would re-introduce the most extensive list of names compiled by this site to replace the name  South Fulton. The CoSF has hired a consultant and is working to come up with a name for the city in short-order.

Getting Serious

Since the November Elections we’ve asked folks to weigh in with suggestions for names of the new city. More than 130 names have been suggested from Arborview to Woodland Hills. Some were obvious in jest – Obamaville and others very serious – Lazarus. The use of the term Creek seems to have caught on because of the Native American heritage of the Creek Confederacy that inhabited the land that makes up the footprint of the our new city.

Most of the traffic for the https://southfultonliving.com website comes from the Cliftondale area it’s very clear that quite a few folks like the name Wolf Creek. Unfortunately, that name works best for what is now District 2 of the new city. It doesn’t carry far beyond that much like Cascade or Sandtown represents parts of District 1. A majority of the suggested names fit well for districts, but not the entire city.

Our desire for a new name has to more regional, if you will. The city is made up of Cascade, Sandtown, Cliftondale, Cedar Grove, Old National, Welcome All, Flat Shoals, and Red Oak. First, I believe we have an obligation to remember those that came before us as we debate a new name. People lived, worked, fought and played on this land hundreds of year before we set foot here. A compound name “X” Creek, seems fitting. Not sure if the new City Council will feel the same.

Second, the name should unite our various communities. Everything we do going forward should unite us. We should treat our communities like the human body, if one part is hurting the entire body hurts. We can no longer ignore one another.

Third,  the name should be welcoming. We have one of the largest inventories of undeveloped land in all of Metro Atlanta. Our desire to see meaningful economic development could be a draw if the name is right.

Finally, the city should have a name that we all will be proud to call home.
