Since the merging of Westwood and
Lakeshore High School there has not
been a track season like the 2009
season. From the start of the season
the girls track team dominated their
opponents in every meet they went to
this year. The coaching staff knew
that the season was going to be
special when they traveled to
compete in the Taco Bell Classic and
finished 2nd out of 185 schools,
which is one of the most competitive
high school track meets today. In
route to their first ever state
championship the lady lions won the
Fulton County track meet by almost
60 points as well as winning their
third straight region tournament.
This championship title will make it
two in four years for the track
program. The boys won the state
championship in 2006.
At the state track meet, Westlake
was on a mission and their hard work
was very evident once the running
began. Their relay teams were barely
challenged as both lead legs
exploded off the line and anchors
crossing the line in gold medal
performances.
The 4x100m relay won with a time of
46.77, which is the 2nd fastest time
run this whole year in Georgia.
The 4x400m relay won with a mouth
dropping time of 3:46.10, which is
the 3rd fastest time ever in
Georgia.
Zahra Thomas then struck quickly for
the Lions holding her form down the
stretch winning the 400m in 55.34.
Shani Chandler took the bronze in
the 100h and had an amazing finish
in the 300 meter hurdles as she hit
the last hurdle with her lead leg
and took a flying tumble, but had
the presence of mind to spring back
up and dive across the finish for
the gold in 43.33.
Aminah Blount finished 4th place in
the 200m dash scoring.
Aubrielle Wright took the 800m race
out in a 59 second split building a
30m lead and held off a hard
charging Nicky Akande of Collins
Hill to take yet another 1st place
effort for Westlake which sewed up
the title.
The boys track team had an
outstanding year as well finishing
3rd at the region and taking a
4x100m relay, 400m runner and 100m
to the 2009 state meet.
